Kieran Trippier (£6m)

  • Trippier offers the bulk of Newcastle’s creativity and chance creation down the right flank, so the club will hope he’ll be able to replicate the form he showed in his 1st season with the Magpies.
  • As 1st choice RB, he takes corners and free kicks and amasses plenty of bonus points as well, so could be one to watch particularly if Newcastle manage to shore up their defence, which was notoriously leaky last season.
  • The reduced fixture congestion should do Trippier a world of good, so the £6m price shouldn’t necessarily be a deterrent.
  • With Newcastle’s one game per week schedule, Trippier should be relatively safe from rotation and play 30+ games.

Fabian Schär (£5.5m)

  • Newcastle’s 1st choice RCB should manage 30+ games once again, having been a staple of the Newcastle defence for the last couple of years.
  • His price is slightly high for the goal threat he offers, so he’s not a player I’d be looking to acquire even if Newcastle improve on the defensive frailties they showcased last season.

Dan Burn (£4.5m)

  • Should start the season at LCB in the absence of Sven Botman who’s out with a serious knee injury until January.
  • His lack of pace may be exposed by quicker forwards, but his aerial and ball playing ability more than makes up for his lack of pace.
  • He could also feature at LB with new signing Lloyd Kelly coming in at LCB.
  • For a cheap Newcastle defensive option, he’s the one to look at, as he offers reliability of starts.

Sven Botman (£4.5m) / Jamaal Lascelles (£4.5m)

  • Both out with serious knee injuries and should return to the team at the same time.
  • Botman is normally a starter and one to consider buying when he returns, with club captain Lascelles being a bench option.

Lloyd Kelly (£4.5m)

  • New signing from Bournemouth who can play LCB and LB.
  • Should offer decent coverage in the aforementioned positions but isn’t necessarily someone you can rely on to claim a starting place with immediate effect.

Bench options:

  • Tino Livramento (£4.5m)
  • Emil Krafth (£4.5m)
  • Matt Targett (£4m)
  • Lewis Hall (£4m)
