He’s likely to play OOP as a striker for Southampton.
Last season Southampton mainly used Armstrong off the right to great effect and Edozie/Sulemana/Fraser off the left.
Through the middle was Adams (now gone), Mara (awful) and Stewart (hasn’t played 90 mins in 2 years). The obvious spot for Brereton Diaz to fit in is center forward, as Armstrong doesn’t offer enough overall quality in that position to give the team a realistic chance of survival.
He averaged 0.57 goal involvements per game last year for Sheffield United. He also racked up 0.50 xG per 90 and 0.62 xg+xa per 90. All this for an incredibly poor side that got relegated.
Southampton, while not great, played all-out attack last season most of the time. If he’s in the CF role he will get opportunities to score and could be a very solid choice at the £5.5m price point.
Joe Aribo (£5m) / Samuel Edozie (£5m) / Kamaldeen Sulemana (£5m)
Joe Aribo can play on either side of the pitch at LW or RW.
The three will rotate in the winger spots over the course of the season.
Adam Lallana (£5m)
An experienced CAM who will offer much needed leadership in midfield. Not worth picking as Southampton won’t be on the offensive in most games.
Will Smallbone (£5m) / Carlos Alcaraz (£5m) / Flynn Downes (£5m)
Smallbone should play the vast majority of games in central midfield, alongside one of Flynn Downes, Shea Charles or Carlos Alcaraz
